10: All Things CAS!

Hey! This post is all about CAS! It is going to be an overview of everything related to CAS, and how it works.

What is CAS?

CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service.

C: This is all of the creative activities you can think of. Whether it be painting, playing an instrument, baking, or taking photos, they all count for this aspect!

A: This is anything that involves your physical and mental well-being and health. Any activity you do that regards these two can be counted under the Activity aspect of CAS.

S: This is pretty much anything you do to help make an impact on others! Volunteer work, serving the community, and advocacy, all count for the Service aspect of CAS!

Why CAS?

CAS is a core component of the IB Diploma, and stands for Creativity, Activity, and Service. CAS is an opportunity to learn what you want to learn, and participate in challenging real-life experiences. IB requires students to do CAS because they want to make sure you are learning more about the world around you, challenging yourself, and doing more than just bookwork!

What doesn’t count for CAS?

  • Anything you’re paid for

  • Things that only benefit you

  • Activities that are part of an IB course

The Major CAS Project

All students MUST participate in one CAS project. The project is supposed to be especially meaningful to you, where you take the leadership role. It should last one month, from planning to completion, and MUST be collaborative.

Supervisors

A supervisor is an adult that can serve as a witness that you did the activity. The supervisor of your experiences CAN NOT be your parents, family members, and other students.

Steps to Take to Complete CAS

  1. Think of an idea

  2. Get it approved by your teacher

  3. Write a proposal using the proposal questions

  4. Upload it to ManageBac

  5. Participate in the experience

  6. Upload evidence into ManageBac (ALL experiences need documentation)

  7. Fill out the reflection questions and upload to ManageBac (ONLY HALF of your experiences require reflections)

CAS Proposal Questions

1. Give your CAS experience a descriptive title, number it, and give the date.

2. Describe your experience in detail, including your roles and responsibilities.

3. Is this independent or collaborative?

4. Is this experience Creativity, Activity, Service, or multiple?  Explain.

5. Predict which of the 7 learning outcomes you will meet, and how. (see below)

6. What, specifically, do you hope to accomplish?  How will you learn or grow from this?

7. Determine the steps necessary to accomplish your goals and give yourself an approximate deadline.

8. Determine where you can go for assistance, advice, and information.

9. Who will supervise this CAS experience?

10. Are there any risks involved with this experience?  Explain

11. How will you document your project?  (journals, spreadsheets, photos, videos, feedback from others, etc.)

CAS Learning Outcomes

All experiences must meet one of these 7 learning outcomes!

1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:  Students are able to see themselves as individuals with various abilities and skills, of which some are more developed than others.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:  A new challenge may be an unfamiliar experience or an extension of an existing one. The newly acquired or developed skills may be shown through experiences that the student has not previously undertaken or through increased expertise in an established area.

3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:  Students can articulate the stages from conceiving an idea to executing a plan for a CAS experience or series of CAS experiences. This may be accomplished in collaboration with other participants. Students may show their knowledge and awareness by building on a previous experience, or by launching a new idea or process.

4. Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences:  Students demonstrate regular involvement and active engagement in CAS.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:  Students are able to identify, demonstrate and critically discuss the benefits and challenges of collaboration gained through CAS experiences.

 6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:  Students are able to identify and demonstrate their understanding of global issues, make responsible decisions, and take appropriate action in response to the issue either locally, nationally or internationally.

7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions: Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences.

CAS Reflection Questions

1. Describe what happened with this experience and to what extent you met your goals.

2. What did you learn about yourself and about others through this experience?

3. What abilities and values have you developed through this experience?

4. How has this experience affected you emotionally or changed your perspective?

5. Which learning outcomes did you accomplish and how?

I hope this post helped clarify some things about CAS!
